Scan the evidence, not the shine

Trust grows when claims, people and processes can be checked. A polished design can make information pleasant to use, but it cannot prove that the information is accurate.

Trust signal scanner · imaginary page: “Choosing a child’s bike helmet”

Safer family cycling

By Aisha Khan, qualified cycle trainer · reviewed 2 September 2026

How to check fit, with photographs from a real fitting session.

  • Reassuring: named author, relevant first-hand experience, review date and sources.
  • Missing: no clear editorial corrections policy.
  • Warning: a “guaranteed safest” product claim has no supporting evidence.

What should the scanner inspect?

Who and how

Clear authorship, subject knowledge, first-hand experience where relevant, and honest explanation of how content was created or reviewed.

Evidence and care

Accurate information, suitable sources and references, meaningful updates and visible corrections. Link to primary evidence where practical.

People behind the site

Useful About and contact information, ownership, editorial transparency and responsible handling of advertising or conflicts.

Beyond the page

Reviews and wider reputation can add context. Look for patterns and independent detail, not one isolated comment.

Responsible operation

HTTPS protects information in transit. Responsible sites also respect privacy, avoid deceptive controls and fix harmful faults.

Claim-to-evidence match

Higher-stakes claims need stronger expertise and support. A personal experience can be useful without becoming universal proof.

E-E-A-T is a framework, not a dial

E-E-A-T means experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. It is a quality-evaluation framework used to think about helpful, reliable results—not a single score, plugin setting or guaranteed ranking factor. Trust sits at its centre: who is responsible, what supports the claim and whether the page is safe to rely on.
