The authority garden

Authority is recognition that a person, organisation or resource is a credible source on a subject. It develops through useful work and relationships—not by switching on a score.

Plant something worth finding

Publish genuinely useful resources: original research with a clear method, a practical tool, reusable template or worked example. It should solve a real audience problem. Maintain it as facts, products or circumstances change.

Credible places

Use accurate professional profiles and relevant directories that real people consult. A selective industry association listing is different from bulk submissions to unrelated directories.

Earned attention

Digital PR gives journalists or publishers a genuinely useful story, expert contribution or dataset. Legitimate outreach is specific, honest and easy to decline.

Relationships

Contribute helpfully to communities. Build partnerships or collaborations with aligned organisations, with transparent terms and value for both audiences.

Repair useful routes

Ask a publisher to link an existing unlinked brand mention when it would help readers. For a relevant broken link, offer a genuinely suitable replacement—never mass-send a generic pitch.

Practical example

A small accessibility consultancy publishes a tested meeting checklist and explains its method. It shares the resource with a professional body whose members asked for it, contributes to a community discussion, and updates the checklist after standards change. A relevant editorial link may follow because the resource helps people—not because either party promised rankings.
