Mission briefing

Player objective: help a specific visitor complete a real task. A page should not exist merely to target a phrase. Its opening, detail and next action should all support that mission.

  1. 1

    Identify the visitor’s real goal

  2. 2

    Answer the main question early

  3. 3

    Add useful supporting detail

  4. 4

Make the content easy to scan

  5. 5

    Provide evidence or practical experience

  6. 6

Give the visitor a sensible next step

Thin versus useful

Thin route

Repeats the target phrase

  • Generic claims
  • No answer until late
  • No basis for advice
  • Next step serves only the publisher
Useful route

Completes the visitor’s mission

  • Direct answer near the start
  • Specific steps and trade-offs
  • Evidence or honest experience
  • Logical, relevant next action

Content-quality pre-launch check

  • Identify the visitor’s real goal
  • Answer the main question early
  • Add useful supporting detail
  • Make the content easy to scan
  • Provide evidence or practical experience
  • Give the visitor a sensible next step

This is a planning aid, not a ranking formula. Tick only what a visitor can actually see and use.

Common mission failures

The delayed answer

A long introduction makes the visitor hunt for the point.

The unsupported claim

“Best” or “proven” appears without criteria, sources or experience.

The phrase loop

Keywords replace explanation and make the copy unnatural.

The dead end

The page answers a question but offers no sensible way to apply it or continue.

A small before-and-after

Before

“Low-light plants are the best low-light plants for low-light homes. Read our low-light plant guide.”

After

“A snake plant tolerates lower light, but it will grow more slowly. Let the top of its compost dry before watering; check that it is out of reach if your pet chews plants.”

The second version answers early, adds a practical limitation and avoids pretending one recommendation fits everyone. No universal word count makes content useful, and no length guarantees results.
