Search presentation

Meta description

A meta description is a short HTML summary that may be used to describe a page in search results.

In Plain English

A meta description is a proposed summary stored in a page’s HTML. It can help a search result communicate the page’s purpose clearly and encourage the right visitor to investigate. The summary should accurately reflect visible content and the likely search intent. Search systems may instead generate a different snippet when another passage better fits a particular query. Treat the description as useful editorial copy, not as guaranteed text or a direct ranking switch.

Why it matters

A clear, specific summary helps people decide whether the page matches their task. Misleading or generic copy creates poor expectations even when it attracts a click.

Write for recognition rather than a fixed character formula. Name the page’s subject, make its distinctive value clear, and avoid claims the destination cannot support. Important information still belongs in visible page content because a description may be ignored or rewritten. Review the actual snippets shown for meaningful searches when data becomes available, but remember that different queries can produce different summaries for the same URL.

Example

<meta
  name="description"
  content="Learn how crawling, indexing and ranking differ in this beginner-friendly SEO guide."
/>

Common misunderstanding

Search engines are not required to display the supplied description exactly, and adding keywords to it does not guarantee a ranking boost.
