The recommendation network

A backlink is a link to a page from another website. Search crawlers can follow these routes to discover pages. In context, a link can also resemble one publisher recommending a useful resource—but it is not automatically a vote, and no individual backlink guarantees higher rankings.

Backlinks and internal links

Across websites

Backlink

Another site links to yours. It can support discovery and provide external context, depending on the source and placement.

Read the label on the route

  • Followed link: an ordinary link without a qualifying relationship attribute. Crawlers may follow it; outcomes are never guaranteed.
  • nofollow: asks search systems not to treat the link as a standard endorsement.
  • sponsored: identifies advertising, sponsorship or another compensated placement.
  • ugc: identifies user-generated content such as forum posts. These link attributes provide context; systems decide how to process them.

One thoughtful route versus a noisy crowd

Relevant example

One credible recommendation

A respected horticultural society links from its drought-gardening guide to your original water-use calculator because it helps its readers. The subject, audience and reason align.

Suspicious example

Hundreds of irrelevant links

Automated pages about casinos, coupons and unrelated products all use repeated anchor text to link to the calculator. Volume cannot repair absent relevance or credibility.

Avoid rigged recommendations

Purchased links intended to manipulate search, automated backlinks and indiscriminate exchanges are link schemes. They can waste money, damage reputation and lead search systems to ignore links or take action. Earn genuine attention through useful work instead; Lesson 03 shows safer methods.
