In Plain English
Anchor text is the signpost on a link. Wording such as “beginner’s watering guide” explains the destination better than “click here”.
Why it matters
Descriptive link text helps visitors decide whether to follow a route and provides context when links are encountered away from surrounding copy.
Example
<a href="/guides/watering/">Read the houseplant watering guide</a>
Common misunderstanding
Anchor text should be useful and natural. Repeating forced keyword-rich links does not make an irrelevant route valuable.
Put it into practice
