The improvement flight plan
A responsible test is a controlled adjustment, not a dashboard reaction. Start from a dated baseline and follow the loop.
- 1ObserveDescribe the evidence.
- 2Form a hypothesisState what might explain it.
- 3Choose one changeMake it meaningful and isolated.
- 4RecordNote what, where and when.
- 5Allow timeWait for a useful sample.
- 6Review evidenceUse a fair comparison.
- 7Keep, revise or reverseProtect what works, then loop.
Adjust one control
You might improve a page title, clarify search intent, strengthen relevant internal links, update outdated content, improve page speed or make a call to action clearer. Changing several at once makes their effects difficult to separate and is not a controlled test.
Useful comparison
Compare equivalent periods long enough to reduce noise. Account for weekdays, seasons, campaigns, tracking changes and external events.
Responsible review
A movement after a change is correlation, not proof that the change caused it. Look for other explanations and preserve a copy of the working version.

Practical example
A repair business notices that a useful service page earns impressions but few clicks. It records the existing title and a four-week baseline, changes only the unclear title, and schedules a review against a comparable four-week period. It checks search mix and outside events before deciding whether to keep or reverse the title. The result is evidence, not a ranking guarantee.
Follow transparent records in the Optimization Lab. Genuine results will be added only when enough data exists.
