If fewer people manually browse every result, how does a business become one of the sources, brands or recommendations that search and AI systems recognise?
Traditional SEO has not suddenly become irrelevant. The goal has widened. Ranking a useful page still matters, but so does creating information that can be discovered, crawled, understood, trusted, connected with a recognisable entity, referenced appropriately and used to satisfy the person behind the question.
Search behaviour is changing
In a traditional journey, the searcher does much of the assembly work: choose a result, read it, return to the results, open another tab and compare. In an AI-assisted journey, an interface may assemble an answer first, then offer sources or recommendations to inspect. That can reduce the number of pages a person reviews before deciding, although it does not mean nobody visits websites.

These journeys coexist. The route can vary by person, question and interface.
Both journeys coexist, and one person may use both during the same task. They might ask for a shortlist, open two product pages, search for reviews and then visit a shop. Different search and AI products also retrieve, generate and present information differently. Treat “AI search” as a family of changing interfaces, not one enormous robot wearing a search box as a hat.
The underlying task still matters. Someone wanting a quick definition needs a different answer from someone choosing an accountant. The Level 01 lesson on understanding search intent is therefore as relevant to a conversational question as it is to a short keyword.
AI answers still depend on information
An AI-assisted answer is not created in an information vacuum. Depending on the product and request, a system may work from learned patterns, retrieve current material, use a search index or combine several methods. Google says the usual SEO fundamentals apply to its AI search features and that pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet; it does not require special AI files or markup. For a business, the sensible foundation is publicly accessible, accurate information: useful pages, up-to-date product or service details, clear ownership, consistent business facts and independent sources that can corroborate important claims. Structured information can clarify certain facts. Search indexes can make eligible pages retrievable. Authoritative references can supply context. None of those items guarantees inclusion in a generated answer.
Crawler access also differs by provider and purpose. OpenAI, for example, documents separate controls for its search crawler and training crawler. This is useful operational information, but it should not be generalised into a claim about every AI system. OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers
Become understandable
An entity is a recognisable person, place, organisation, product or concept that systems can distinguish from similarly named things. Nothing mystical is required. “Green Leaf” becomes less ambiguous when its website consistently explains that it is Green Leaf Garden Design Ltd, serves homes in Bristol, offers planting plans and garden maintenance, and provides matching contact details.
State your business or brand name, what it provides, who it serves and where it operates when location matters. Make contact information easy to find. Give products and services their own useful descriptions. Identify the author or organisation responsible for advice and explain relevant expertise without turning the biography into a parade of uncheckable superlatives.
Relationships between pages also help. An about page can identify the organisation, service pages can describe its work, case studies can supply evidence, and sensible internal links can connect the pieces. Consistency does not mean pasting the same paragraph everywhere; it means the facts agree.
Become discoverable
Important pages should be crawlable and built from accessible content. Give them descriptive titles and headings, useful structure, logical internal links and canonical URLs. Maintain an XML sitemap as an additional discovery route. Make mobile pages comfortable and quick to use. Do not hide the only copy of an essential address, price or service description inside an image or an interaction that systems and people may struggle to access.
Google can render JavaScript, but its documentation still recommends server-side or pre-rendering approaches as a good idea because they improve speed for users and crawlers, and not every bot can run JavaScript. Become credible
Evidence is stronger than an adjective. “Award-winning”, “trusted” and “expert” mean little when nobody can check what they refer to. Keep business profiles accurate on reputable platforms. Seek genuine customer reviews, relevant third-party coverage and useful mentions—not a confetti cannon of low-quality directory entries.
Show clear authorship and first-hand experience where they matter. Publish original content that demonstrates how you work. Use transparent delivery, returns, privacy or editorial policies. Date material when freshness is important and correct outdated claims. A repair company could publish photographed examples of common faults, explain who completed each repair and show the limits of the advice. That is more useful than declaring itself “the leading solution” seventeen times.
Create information worth referencing
Generic rewritten content gives people and retrieval systems little reason to prefer one source. Useful reference material might contain original research, real examples, a fair comparison, first-hand experience, detailed specifications, transparent prices where appropriate, or questions drawn from genuine customer conversations.
Definitions and careful explanations can also earn attention. So can demonstrated results when the method, timeframe and limits are visible. A bicycle shop’s measured comparison of tyre performance on local winter routes is more distinctive than another article called “Ten Amazing Cycling Tips”. The point is not novelty for novelty’s sake; it is adding information that helps someone decide or understand.
Frequently asked questions can be useful when customers really ask them. Adding FAQ markup does not guarantee a special search display or an AI citation. The visible answer must do the useful work.
Structure helps, but markup is not magic
Structured data is machine-readable information added to a page to describe supported things—such as an organisation, article, product or event—in a standard vocabulary. It can give eligible systems a clearer interpretation of facts already visible to readers.
Google explicitly says that correctly marked-up structured data does not guarantee a rich result and its guidelines require markup to represent the visible page content. Use the most specific relevant type, validate it, and keep it consistent with the page. Markup is a label, not a visibility switch.
Mentions beyond your own website
A business describing itself consistently is useful; reputable independent sources describing it consistently can provide corroboration. Relevant industry publications, local organisations, professional directories, news coverage, partner websites, expert contributions and genuine review platforms may all help people verify that a business exists and does what it claims.
Quality and relevance matter more than appearing everywhere. A detailed profile in a recognised trade body is usually more informative than fifty abandoned directories. Earn mentions through real work, useful contributions and genuine relationships. Buying links, fabricating reviews or spraying identical biographies across the web builds noise and risk rather than dependable evidence.
What about llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed text file intended to give language models a concise, curated route to a site’s useful material. Its own specification describes it as a proposal. The llms.txt proposal As of this review, major search documentation does not present it as a requirement for visibility, and Google says no new machine-readable files or special schema are needed for its AI features. The careful conclusion is that support and practical effects remain uncertain. Experiment with it only if you have a clear maintenance reason, not because somebody announced a new essential file before breakfast. It is not a replacement for robots.txt, sitemaps, crawlable content, good site structure or provider documentation.
SEO now means broader visibility
Modern optimization still includes traditional search visibility, but the working picture is broader: brand recognition, clear entities, useful source content, technical accessibility, reputation, measurement and adaptation as interfaces change. These are not secret ranking factors. They are practical ways to make information easier for people and machines to find, interpret and verify.
Measure outcomes rather than chasing anecdotes. Search visibility, qualified visits, enquiries, sales and accurately attributed referrals can reveal different parts of the journey. Interfaces and reporting will change, so document what you test and distinguish observations from conclusions. The Optimization Lab’s public experiments show that evidence-led approach in action.
The durable question is not “How do I force my brand into an answer?” It is “Have I published the clearest, most useful and verifiable information I can—and can eligible systems actually access it?” That question was sensible before generative interfaces arrived. It remains sensible now.
