Page structure

Heading

Plain-English definition

A heading labels a page or section so readers can understand and scan its structure.

In Plain English

Headings are the labels in a page’s map. The page-level heading states the main topic, while section and subsection headings introduce the ideas nested beneath it.

Why it matters

Descriptive headings help people scan, navigate with assistive technology and understand how ideas relate. Choose the heading level for its place in the outline, not simply for its visual size.

Example

An H2 called “Watering a snake plant” is clearer than “More information”.

Common misunderstanding

Making text large or bold does not give it the structural meaning of a heading.
